"Bugaboo"
For time:
75/45 pound Thruster, 200 reps
Please join us as we do this special WOD on December 29th in memoriam of Benjamin "Bugaboo" Abruzzo III to raise awareness for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). "Bugaboo" lived for just 200 days before he lost his battle with SMA on December 29th, 2005.
So many other children and families are affected yet knowledge and awareness is very low.
Please read the words in the post below from "Bugaboo"s father who has lost 2 children to this terrible disease.
I believe everything happens for a reason and I believe that the CrossFit community has the power to spread the word.
The first step in fighting for any cause is raising awareness by spreading the word. We are not even asking for donations. All we ask of you, is wherever you are on or around December 29th, do this WOD and PLEASE COME BACK TO THIS SITE AND POST YOUR TIME, LOADS AND THOUGHTS TO COMMENTS so we can see who all we reached. Tell everyone you can why you are doing "Bugaboo" and send the link to this site to everyone you can.
3-2-1-GO!
Here is a list of CrossFit affiliates planning to do this WOD, please join them if you can (standard membership/drop-in fees, etc as applicable). Please contact me if your affiliate would like to do this WOD and would like to be added to the list:

Miguel, thanks for your interest. It's simple really, just tell everyone you can about this site and on Dec 29th (or around then) do the "Bugaboo" awareness WOD and then come back here to post your thoughts, loads, times, comments, etc. Spread the word as much as you can, get as many people as you can to do the WOD (or a scaled version) and then come back here and post about it. Thanks!

25:20 as Rx. Glad I could help get the word out.
ReplyDeleteBen-
ReplyDeleteToday's classes began with the typical arrival and scramble to see what is being served up with CrossFit today. As imagined, it was met with grumbles and a few 'have you lost your mind? 200??" After hearing your story and the purpose, the tone was quickly a can and will do attitude. Our box attacked it, and did not complain a bit...because we are blessed we CAN do this. May God's blessings shower your family and we pray for the success of your cause.

This Rob from CrossFit West Houston. We did Bugaboo today and was very proud to do it. We had 22 people do this WOD today. As I told everybody suffering through the 200 Thrusters is the least we can do to raise awareness and memorialize Bugaboo and Adi-pie! It was well worth the effort and pain.
ReplyDelete23:18 RX'd.
As Rx. 21:09. Certainly among the toughest workouts I've done in a long time.
ReplyDeleteHonored to participate in Bugaboo's name!

ReplyDeleteWhat a humbling story. Thank you for sharing and for raising awareness. I was not aware of SMA before today. With a 6 month old at home I can only sympathize for your great loss. You will be in our family's thoughts and prayers.
My name is Christina Hemeyer and me and my husband, Gary, are members of Crossfit Silverback in Spring, TX. My time was a little over 16 minutes and my husband was just over 14. Thanks for sharing your story and sharing your precious children with us. This was by far the hardest workout we have ever done, but all worth the pain in Bugaboo's name.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to post the load. I did 30# and Gary did 45#.

ReplyDeleteMy wife and I know another couple that suffered a loss to SMA and still didn't fully understand, thank you and Shane for making awareness a new priority. I was so proud of the athletes @ CF Silverback as I explained why 200 reps was so significant, clarity and purpose are beautiful things. Thank you for sharing Bugaboo and Addi-pie with us.

When I got home from this WOD last night, I counted how old my son Jag is. 208 days. I cannot for one second imagine the pain your family must have in your hearts. Every difficult push through that 200 saw my son in my mind. Thank you so much for showing us all a way to turn something so difficult into something positive. I truly admire your courage, grace, and strength.
